What is TECM?

Teachers of Elementary Classroom Music
An affiliate of the Utah Music Teachers Association

JOIN TECM

TECM was organized in 1991 to encourage the teaching of music in elementary classrooms. It is the intent of TECM to assist elementary teachers and music specialists through their publication, workshops, and networking.

TECM members get a copy of the UMEA journal (three times per year) that includes The Musical Classroom, a publication with ideas, lesson plans, and resources for teaching the music core to elementary students. TECM members also receive an updated calendar in each issue about conferences and workshops for music. Detailed information for the annual UMEA/TECM Professional Development Conference, held the first weekend February of each year in St. George, is included in the UMEA journal, and the The Musical Classroom.

TECM members get reduced rates on conference registration and other workshops sponsored by UMEA/TECM. Members are also eligible to receive awards presented annually by the UMEA for outstanding teaching of music and superior accomplishment in music.

Your membership means you become a part of a network of elementary classroom teachers and music educators who care about teaching children through music!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: “How long is my membership good for?
A: One calendar year. If you join in February 2009, your membership is current until the end of February 2010. The membership chairman is Curtis Payne, cpayne@infowest.com

Q: “If I am a TECM member, am I also considered a UMEA member?”
A: No, UMEA (Utah Music Educators Association) is the state affiliate of MENC: The National Association for Music Education. UMEA dues are more money. TECM is sponsored only by UMEA, not MENC.

Q: “What are the advantages of joining UMEA?”
A: UMEA members are usually secondary music teachers, or full-time music teachers. UMEA members receive a journal from the national office every month as well as the UMEA journal that all TECM members receive. They are allowed to vote for all board members of UMEA. (TECM members only vote for the Elementary Vice-President.) UMEA members are also able to benefit from many programs provided by MENC: The National Association for Music Education. Elementary classroom teachers are welcome to join UMEA rather than TECM if they feel it better suits their needs.
