Approval Form for Sanctioning Events
UMEA has been given the responsibility for vetting all music events for sanctioning by the Utah High School Activities Association. The Application for Approval of Music Event form, linked here: event approval form,
must be completely filled out and submitted to Sharee Jorgensen firstname.lastname@example.org
no later than 45 days before the event. The form must be submitted EVERY YEAR, regardless if it is an annual event.
Events must comply with the following:
Compliance to UHSSA eligibility rules must be followed. If participants involved are in grades other than 9 through 12, an open class must be held separately.
Each event must show proof of liability and or property insurance. UMEA is only the vetting body and assumes NO RISK OR LIABILITY FOR THE EVENT.
Be advised that no music or speech event will be sanctioned, if school time is missed the day prior to the event for travel or participation. In essence, not more than one day of school time may be missed, including travel, to obtain a sanction.

The Music Performance Assessment Rubric: A tool for learning - Vince Burgoyne
The UMEA Marching Band Committee runs seven shows each year in Utah. They are (in this year's order):
Weber Review, Nebo Tournament of Bands, Bridgerland Band Invitational, Wasatch Front Invitational, Davis Cup, Mt. Timpanogos Competition, and the Red Rocks Competition-which also doubles as our state championship show.
Bands are classified by band size-NOT school size so a school that competes in 4A with athletics and other music activities could be classified anywhere from 1A to 5A, depending on the size of the band.
UMEA competitions use a panel of six judges; two music, two visual, one percussion, and one color guard. The music judges each account for 27.5% of the total score (55% combined). The two visual judges each account for 17.5% of the total score (35% combined). The percussion judge and color guard judge each account for 5% of the total score. At each show, there are four caption awards. Outstanding music performance is given to the band that scores highest on the combined total of the two music judges and the percussion judge. Outstanding visual performance is given to the band that scores the highest on the combined total of the two visual judges and the color guard judge. Outstanding Percussion is given to the band that receives the highest score from the percussion judge. Outstanding Auxiliary goes to the Color Guard that receives the highest score from their judge.
